01

Context

IGTC is a WooCommerce store. The work covered the two surfaces that decide whether a store sells — the product page and the checkout — plus the structure and speed of the store around them.

My involvement was development and technical ownership of those surfaces rather than brand or campaign work.

02

Challenge

Default WooCommerce templates are built to be universal, which means they are rarely right for a specific store. The checkout in particular carries fields, steps and layout decisions that belong to the platform, not to the business.

On mobile, where most of the traffic for a store like this sits, those defaults cost the most: longer forms, weaker hierarchy and more friction between a decision and a completed order.

03

My role

  • Customized the WooCommerce checkout.
  • Improved product pages.
  • Improved mobile UX across the store.
  • Optimized store speed and performance.
  • Supported Apple Pay and payment method setup.
  • Refined the overall store structure.
04

Approach

  1. 01

    Understand the store

Catalogue structure, the path a customer takes to an order, and where the default theme and WooCommerce templates were getting in the way.

  2. 02

    Structure

Fix the store structure and page hierarchy first, so the layout work had something stable underneath it.

  3. 03

    Build

Customize checkout and product page templates with custom CSS and template work, rather than stacking plugins to cover gaps.

  4. 04

    Optimize

Work through store speed and performance — assets, images and delivery — as part of the build.

  5. 05

    Test

Check the purchase path across devices and browsers, including payment method behaviour.

05

Technical work

Checkout customization
WooCommerce checkout customization to fit the store's actual purchase flow instead of the default template's assumptions.
Product page improvements
Template and layout work on the product page — the surface where the buying decision is made.
Payment setup support
Supported Apple Pay and payment method configuration, including checking behaviour on the devices that use it.
Store performance
Speed and performance optimization across the store as part of delivery, not as a later cleanup pass.
Custom CSS over plugin sprawl
Presentation handled in custom CSS and template customization, keeping the number of moving parts — and the maintenance cost — down.
06

Interface & UX

Mobile first, deliberately
Mobile UX was treated as its own design problem. A store checkout that works on a phone is a different layout, not a narrower one.
Fewer decisions per step
Checkout work aimed at reducing what the customer has to read, decide and re-enter before an order completes.
Structure a customer can hold
Store structure refined so categories and products sit where a customer would look for them.
07

Performance & quality

Store speed and performance optimization was part of the scope. The work covered the usual levers on a WooCommerce store: asset and image weight, caching behaviour and delivery.

08

Outcome

  • Delivered a customized WooCommerce checkout and improved product pages.
  • Delivered mobile UX improvements across the store.
  • Delivered store speed and performance optimization.
  • Supported Apple Pay and payment setup.
  • Refined the overall store structure.

Have a site or store that needs to work better?

Tell me what is happening and on which page. A diagnosis is a useful first deliverable on its own.

I read every message myself and reply within one working day — usually with a question or two before anything else, because a scope worth quoting needs them answered.
